A lived and embodied artwork in the form of a legal name change.
 
Working within a World War One practice of naming children after battles on the Western Front in which their fathers fought, I have assigned myself a new middle name to correct a family myth.
​
My great-great-grandfather instructed that his daughter be named Vera Mons in tribute to him fighting in the Battle of Mons in Belgium, forming a family tradition (my sister is also named Mons). It was later discovered that he lied and was never sent to Mons.
​
He was actually stationed in British-occupied India. I have changed my middle name to correct this family lie and place the story within its broader colonial context.
